Hello Garden City School Families! FEN hopes you are all off to an amazing school year! Garden City School Family Engagement Network is a volunteer organization made up of parents, teachers, administrators, and support staff who are all dedicated to the successful education of our children. The purpose of FEN is to enhance the educational experience through events, activities, assemblies, supplies, support, and school spirit! We accomplish this as a network of engaged teachers, administrators, students, & parents all working together as a “Family”.
FEN would like to THANK all of you who came to our first meeting of the year on Thursday, 9/15. The FEN meeting minutes will be added to the school website http://www.gardencityelementaryschool.com/, the Garden City School Family Engagement Network Facebook page and with the Principal’s monthly newsletter.
The monthly meetings will be held on the third Thursday of each month from 6:30-7:30pm in the school library. Refreshments will be served and provided by member volunteers. Child care at the monthly meetings will be provided in the school gym. If anyone would like to bring any new topics to the meeting, please send an email to GardenCityFEN@gmail.com one week prior to the scheduled meeting so it can be added to the agenda. Since we are trying to keep the meeting to only an hour, the agenda will need to be adjusted to accommodate any new discussion topics. We thank you in advance and certainly encourage new ideas.
The meeting began with introductions of this year’s FEN board members: President–Erica Wiedenroth; Vice President–Amy Reyes; Treasurer–Maria Davenport; Secretary–Reyna Gelfuso; Public Relations–Rachel McNally; Teacher Representative–Joanne Kohm.
Treasurer’s Report: There is $1,067 in the account, with no outstanding expenses.
If all goes well, the goal is to have only two fundraiser events this year. However we will have to see the results of the two indicated below first:
The Hershey Candy Sale is underway (profit goal: $6,000). By now interested families have their box of candy and are actively selling the assortment. Please return the money in the envelope provided in the candy box by Friday, September 29th. If you are interested in selling an additional box please email GardenCityFEN@gmail.com. If you would like to make a $30 donation in lieu of selling candy, please return it to Garden City FEN. We would like to thank everyone who is participating in this fundraising effort.
The Harvest Fest Color Run (profit goal: $10,500) is scheduled for Saturday, November 4th. The Color Run promotion begins 10/2. Monica Mays will be having a kickoff meeting at the end of the month. If anyone is interested in being on the committee please send an email to GardenCityFEN@gmail.com.
BOX TOPS: Stephanie Santucci is our Box Top Program Coordinator again this year and is responsible for submitting the appropriate, non-expired box tops by the submission dates of November 1st and March 1st. This evening it was voted on that the Box Tops proceeds will be allocated to the FEN budget rather than the general
school budget and will be used for the sole purpose of school improvement projects (ie. Blacktop). It was also decided that Box Tops will be collected from the classrooms on a monthly basis. This will give Stephanie more time to prepare for the submission dates. Students can bring their box tops in an envelope and leave it in the collection box or envelope provided in the classroom. On the last day of the month there will be a combination spirit day/box top return day as a reminder to bring in any box tops. September 29th is the first monthly return and it will be Crazy Hat day.
Back to School Bash: Budget $500. Total cost: $603
Feedback: 2nd face painter needed (face painter/parent volunteer-Abel Rego is a huge hit), DJ was great (Jay Treolar-parent volunteer), recruit rest of school environment to help plan, support, volunterr; open house Pre K & K – have someone inside school to help direct parents to classrooms; be mindful of times and dinner options; inflatable bounce house, side walk chalk, bring your own games; have new 5th graders bring games.
BooHoo/Yahoo Breakfast: items were donated, therefore no cost to FEN
It didn’t rain this year so the table was in a good location on the front lawn. Garden City Parents enjoyed various baked treats and coffee after the kids entered the school on the first day. Emotions were high all around.
FALL FAMILY NIGHT @ MORRIS FARMS is Friday, 9/22 @ 6:30pm. Enjoy a hayride and a night of games, contests, crafts, treats and refreshments. The last cornmaze is at 7:15pm. Bring a flashlight! If anyone can help volunteer this evening please email GardenCityFEN@gmail.com. This is always a well attended event...plus the pumpkins are back this year.
After School Programming: is organized by Amy Reyes and Monica Mays. The after school clubs are typically scheduled Monday-Thursday, run for a 4-week period and are usually well attended. Friday’s are reserved for the one-time Pop-Up sessions and are also very popular. Some of the clubs include playdoh, lego, creative writing, yoga and dance. Any additional club suggestions and parent volunteers to run the after school program, please contact FEN at GardenCityFEN@gmail.com. A BCI check is needed for all volunteers.
At the meeting, sign-up sheets were available for various upcoming activities and events (see below). If you would like to be part of the committee or volunteer at an event, please email GardenCityFEN@gmail.com and your name will be provided to the committee chairperson.
